Emotional Materials

The emotion elicited by materials in industrial products, 2011

This research aims to investigate the emotional potentialities of materials to understand the dynamics around the perception of the materials by the user in the interaction with the product. The research has been conducted through three tests focusing on users perceptions of materials properties and qualities. The obtained data showed that the materials of industrial products could evoke mostly positive emotions, rather than negative ones, and that users have a built idea of matter even before its embodiment in an artifact, that the designer has to understand to properly design. This research provides some design strategies to rise the designer awareness towards the necessity of the design of an emotional component of products.
